Sea-Watch 3 seized by Italian authorities due to 'irregularities'

The private rescue ship Sea-Watch 3, run by the German organization Sea Watch, has been seized by Italian authorities after an inspection uncovered "administrative" and "safety" irregularities, which could "compromise the vessel, its crew and anyone who might be rescued by it."

Italian authorities have seized the Sea-Watch 3, which was docked in the Sicilian port of Empedocle since it disembarked more than 200 migrants it rescued towards the end of June.

After an inspection by the Italian coast guard, authorities declared they had uncovered "several irregularities" on the ship, some of which would have to be addressed by Germany as the country under whose flag the ship sails.

The Sea-Watch 3 had been in quarantine after disembarking the migrants over the weekend of June 20-21. Its voyage in June was the first after another three-month enforced stop partly due to previous inspections and the coronavirus pandemic.

'Technical and operational irregularities'

According to the Italian regional newspaper La Sicilia, the coast guard noted several problems in the technical and operational areas. They said some of them were so serious they could "compromise the safety of the vessel, the crew and those on board, including those who had been rescued and might be rescued in the future." In addition, reported La Sicilia, the coastguard found "some infringements of the marine environment."

The administrative stop imposed on the ship will last "until all the irregularities are rectified," wrote La Sicilia. Some of those, the news agency AFP wrote, will require intervention from Germany.

Sea Watch vs. Italian coastguard

Referring to an ongoing standoff between the private rescue ships and the Italian coast guard, the Italian news agency AGI writes that the coast guard officials "knew where to search." It adds that is perhaps because after spending several weeks at sea, 28 of the 211 migrants on board tested positive for COVID-19 after they disembarked on the quarantine ship Moby Zaza.

However, AGI writes, the Italian authorities are not contesting the proper use of protective clothing and bags during the rescues, nor the monitoring of the state of health of the migrants whilst they were on board, but rather the conditions in which the boat first set out to sea on its mission on June 6. It says that at the time, Italy "was in a delicate state of slowly reopening after a severe lockdown amid fears of a second lockdown imminent."

The crew of Sea-Watch 3 state that they followed every protocol and safety rule to the letter. Even whilst its team were in quarantine in the Sicilian port, the organization Sea Watch has continued to put pressure on Italian and Maltese authorities as well as the EU to make sure that the rescue of migrant boats drifting in the Mediterranean continues.

It is not going well with the Banksy boat. No country ( so far) wants to take in the refugees.

Italian coastguard mounts operation to retrieve refugees from Banksy's migrant boat

The crew of the Louise Michel had been claiming its appeals for assistance were being ignored by governments

Italian coastguards mounted an operation on Saturday to retrieve women and children from a refugee rescue boat funded by the street artists Banksy after it became stranded in the Mediterranean Sea.

The crew of the Louise Michel claimed its appeals for assistance were being ignored by the authorities, despite the vessel carrying more than 200 people rescued from small dinghies.

One of those on board had died, according to tweets posted from the vessel's account.

But on Saturday afternoon the Italian authority announced one of its Coast Guard patrols from the island of Lampedusa had reached the stricken boat and removed 49 of the most vulnerable refugees, including 32 women and 13 children.

The Italian coast guard said it acted in response to a request from the Maltese authorities. Weather conditions were deteriorating and the situation was becoming dangerous, the coast guard said.

The former French navy boat - named after the legendary anarchist Louise Michel and launched under its new guise last week with a Banksy painting of a young girl holding on to a heart-shaped safety float painted on its side - was spotted lying off the coast of Malta on Saturday morning.

The boat, manned by a 'non hierarchical ' crew of 10, all vegans, issued a series of tweets overnight and on Saturday saying its situation was worsening, and appealing in vain for help from authorities in Italy, Malta and Germany.

It said overcrowding meant it was in danger of capsizing if it moved under its own steam.

In response an Italian NGO rescue vessel, the Mare Jonio, was also preparing to leave the port of Augusta in Sicily.

In a statement Saving Humans Mediterranea said: "We decided to intervene, anticipating the scheduled start of our Mission 09 by 48 h, because at the moment neither the Maltese nor the Italian authorities are providing the necessary assistance to over 150 people in imminent life danger.

"It will be a long journey and we hope that the military units of the Italian Coast Guard or the Maltese ones decide to intervene first."

In a call for governments to act, the crew of the Louise Michel tweeted a photograph of some of the refugees it had rescued. It added: “There is already one dead person on the boat. We need immediate assistance.”

The group behind the 30 metre long rescue boat, bought with proceeds from the sale of Banksy artwork, said it cannot safely move because of an overcrowded deck.

One tweet said: "Louise Michel is unable to move, she is no longer the master of her manoeuvre, due to her overcrowded deck and a liferaft deployed at her side, but above all due to Europe ignoring our emergency calls for immediate assistance."

On Saturday a video was posted to Banksy's Instagram account showing the vessel at work.

It was accompanied by the words: "Like most people who make it in the art world, I bought a yacht, to cruise the Med.

"It's a French navy vessel we converted into a lifeboat because EU authorities deliberately ignore distress calls from 'non-Europeans'."

The footage ended with the words All Black Lives Matter.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the International Organization of Migration (IOM) called for the immediate disembarkation of more than 400 rescued migrants and refugees currently on board three vessels in the Central Mediterranean, including the Louise Michel.

A group of some 27 migrants and refugees, including pregnant women and children who departed from Libya have been on board the commercial vessel Maersk Etienne for what it said was “an unacceptable three-week period” since their rescue on 5 August.

The two organisations added that a further 200 rescued people on the Sea Watch 4 NGO vessel and should also be “promptly provided with a safe port”.

The Louise Michel has been operational since last week.

On Thursday it rescued 89 people, including 14 women and four children, from a rubber boat in distress, the group said on its website, adding that it was "safeguarding 219 people with a crew of 10".

The vessel is captained by a professional rescuer crew with a "flat hierarchy and a vegan diet".

Banksy, who first made his name painting art on buildings in his native-Bristol under his now famous pseudonym, is understood to have become involved in the rescue project after making contact with Pia Klemp, an experienced captain of a number NGO boats, in September 2019 asking to help.

Like I said, get Banksy's house declared an Independent country and he can then offer them asylum in his house.

Is his house big enough? So far more than 200.000 thousand refugees arrived in Italy those last couple of years.

I was referring specifically to the ones on his boat. But, yeah, send the lot of them round his gaffe. He wants them, let him deal with them.

For some odd reason England has replaced the USA as the country the whole world wants to get to, including the 200000 refugees currently in Italy. Give Banksy 100% tax cut and invite him to be personally financially responsible for relocating all these people from Italy to England, housing, feeding and clothing them for the indefinite future.

You are spoiling your refugees too much. Housing them in hotels , giving them money, treat them as royalties, because if they need a big house for their large family, they are being placed in a mansion . It is the same in Sweden.

Somali refugee family given £2m council house in exclusive London neighbourhood

Syrian refugees moved into six-bedroom home after no family found 'could be first of many'

Jobless migrants move in to £1.3MILLION plush house on benefits

So the words gets around.

That's why they keep coming. The promised land of milk and honey.
When they set foot on the shore, they are made for life.

Treat them well. They are our replacement.

Of course, those bills for the big mansions and hotels are paid by the taxpayer.
Including food and everything. Probably cash too.

Which protects the jobs of the Italian workers who work in those hotels who would otherwise have lost their jobs due to the Covid stopping vacationers visiting Italy and also protects the farmers who grow the food which would otherwise go uneaten and rot Wasting food is wrong PEOPLE!

Eleven dead after boat carrying refugees sinks off Tunisia

A boat carrying 27 people, all from Africa, sank off the coast of Sfax city killing 11; officials say 7 were rescued.

At least 11 people died, including eight women and three children, and seven others were rescued when a boat carrying refugees sank off southern Tunisia, officials said late on Sunday.

A police source said the boat carrying 27 people, all African nationals, sank off the coast of the port city of Sfax.

Countries in North Africa like Tunisia and Libya are seen as a starting point for migrants and refugees, many of them fleeing wars and hunger, who want to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

More than 620 people are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean this year – a dangerous sea journey that has killed at least 20,000 since 2014, according to data gathered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In recent years, many European countries have hardened their immigration process, drawing condemnation from human rights groups and aid agencies, who have repeatedly pointed out the inadequate response by maritime authorities when alerted of people left adrift in rickety boats.

About 17,000 people arrived in Italy and Malta this year by boat from Libya and Tunisia. While the number is a threefold increase compared with 2019, it is still drastically lower compared with the previous year.

These boats need to be rendered permanently unsailable. Boats can never be built as fast as they can be scuttled.
