Portland Mayor bans use of tear gas by police

After months of protests, police officers in Portland, Oregon, will no longer use tear gas for crowd control.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler made the announcement on Thursday and said it's time to reduce "the violence in our community."

"During the last hundred days, Portland, Multnomah County and State Police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety," Wheeler said in a statement. "We need something different. We need it now."

The ban is effective immediately and until further notice, Wheeler said.

The mayor also noted that police would still take appropriate measures when necessary to curb criminal activity.

"Arson, vandalism, and violence are not going to drive change in this community," he said. "I expect the police to arrest people who engage in criminal acts. I expect the District Attorney to prosecute those who commit criminal acts. And I expect the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those individuals accountable. We must stand together as a community against violence and for progress."

The announcement comes after Wheeler said in June that police would no longer use tear gas to disperse crowds, "unless there is a serious and immediate threat to life safety, and there is no other viable alternative for dispersal."

Thursday's announcement, however, appears to go a step further, banning the use of tear gas all together.
The move isn't the first by the mayor to restrict some of the police department's reach.

On Wednesday, Portland also banned the use of facial-recognition technology by all city departments, including police. In that announcement, Wheeler expressed concerns about invasion of privacy and the potential misuse of the technology.

Portland has witnessed protests against police brutality since the death of George Floyd in May. After the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin, protests picked up steam. Last Saturday marked the 100th straight day of demonstrations.

The protests have resulted in damaged buildings, injured police officers and protesters and hundreds of arrests.

Through it all, tear gas has continued to be used on the crowds, despite Wheeler's June order.

Once again the far-right and institutionally Islamophobic BBC engages in a blatant ploy to divert its racist white supremacist audience from the foremost issue of police brutality against innocent black people and Muslims by unquestioningly displaying a deliberately fuzzy video purporting to show a black Muslim man walking up to a police car and firing a gun at two racist trigger-happy cops seated within in a futile attempt to promote the false narrative of police victimhood and thereby induce totally unwarranted sympathy for the police in Islamophobic white racist viewers who are just looking for any excuse to absolve themselves of their inborn responsibility for slavery, colonialism and everything that is wrong in the lives of Muslims and people of color everywhere. Brothers and white allies are advised to regard the following "news" item with complete scepticism:

And that is not the end of that horror story. LA County Sheriffs writes:

Why the Left needs racism
By most objective standards and metrics, the United States is the least racist among the advanced countries of the world. Yet racism has been made into the foremost boogeyman in America of the 21st century. Why?

The short answer is that exaggerating the problem of racism is an absolute necessity for many. Racism is the wind under the wings of Marxists in their flight to Utopia while at the same time it is useful for the liberal establishment in maintaining its hold on power. The race card is also the glue holding the Democrat coalition together. The two groups which the current obsession on racism hurts are the white middle-class and ironically black and Hispanic minorities themselves.

As for the liberal establishment, it has been fundamental in fomenting a "cancel culture." To be called a racist, even when unfounded, has cost people their employment and careers. Just the accusation can be enough to exclude a person from the public square. Liberals hurl charges of racism against anyone who disagrees with them as a way to bully the opposition into silence.
Islam: an idea to kill and die for.

California is burning.
Officials battling a wildfire in Northern California that has become the state’s deadliest of the year so far are fearing the death toll could rise further Friday as at least 16 people remain missing.

There are at least 15 people reported dead across California, Oregon and Washington as wildfires continue to rage in all three states.

The North Complex fire as of this morning has burned more than 244,000 acres near Oroville and is only 23% contained, according to Cal Fire. But authorities say it is now advancing more slowly Friday as winds have eased and smoke from it has shaded the area and lowered the temperature, allowing firefighters to make progress.
Most of those fires have been human-made fires.
Authorities arrest 4 in connection to possible arson, fires along West Coast

Two of the suspects remain unidentified, and authorities dismissed potential political affiliations

Four have been arrested on suspicion of arson in West Coast areas already under seige from major destructive and deadly blazes, according to reports.

As wildfires continue to rage across three states, police investigated separate incidents near existing wildfires. Two men in Washington state, one man in Oregon and one woman in California are facing charges, according to the Daily Wire.

The latest reports suggest that at least 20 people have died in California, eight in Oregon and one in Washington state as firefighters struggle to contain already deadly fires.

Ashland, Ore., Police Chief Tighe O'Meara announced Thursday that a criminal investigation was opened into the cause of the Almeda fire calling the circumstances around the fire 'suspicious'.

The fire sparked in Ashland Tuesday and although it mostly spared the Oregon Shakespeare Festival town, the blaze has killed two people and destroyed hundreds of homes.

“We have good reason to believe that there was a human element to it,” O’Meara said, according to Reuters. “We’re going to pursue it as a criminal investigation until we have reason to believe that it was otherwise.”

Police accused Michael Jarrod Bakkela, 41, of starting a separate fire near the railroad tracks in Phoenix, Ore., Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. In a statement, the sheriff’s office said that while the Almeda fire burned, “residents witnessed Bakkela lighting a fire behind their house on Quail Lane.”

Deputies and Oregon State Police troopers who arrived at the scene said they saw Bakkela “standing close to a very large fire threatening several homes.”

Bakkela has been charged with two counts of first degree arson, 15 counts of first degree criminal mischief and 14 counts of reckless endangering.

The district attorney dismissed suggestions that Esquivel had ties to far-left groups, such as Antifa.

Two unidentified men were arrested in connection to fires in Washington: One man allegedly started a fire on State Route 167 at Meridian, while another man was detained a day later allegedly starting a fire at State Route 512, the Daily Mail reported.

Oregon Homeowners Warn Looters Amid Wildfire: ‘You Loot, We Shoot’

Oregon homeowners have issued warnings for those who seek to loot and damage property amid wildfire evacuations, posting signs that state they will shoot and kill those who do so.

“You loot, we shoot,” read one handpainted sign outside of a home, which was captured by KPTV journalist Devin Eskew as he covered the destruction. “We won’t call your family. Your body will never be found!! Bang bang,” another sign stated.

Other signs captured by Eskew warn looters and arsonists that the homeowners are still in the area.

“Home and armed. U Loot we shoot,” another sign stated. Another sign reads, “Looters and arsonists will be SHOT.”

As a result of the wildfire’s spread in Oregon, more than ten percent of the state’s population, which includes more than 500,000 people, have been told to vacate the area in an attempt to stray from danger.

“The last thing I want to see is anything tragically happen because somebody’s overreacting to something they think is criminal and it is not,” Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said.

According to local authorities in Oregon, certain residents have begun setting up roadblocks and requesting identification before allowing other individuals to enter certain neighborhoods.

"Arson" is a bit of a harsh word now isn't it? A man sorry! woman sorry! user of gender-neutral bathrooms er er. Anyway a person gotta EAT sometime. If you're out on the road spreadin' the message dat Black Lives Matter yo' ain't got no kitchen to cook yo' food in. Wotchagonna do??!! Yo' gonna cook yo' sausages (halal vegetarian chicken naturally) ova an open fire in da fryin' pan yo' took wid ya! The law of averages ensures that a certain percentage of those fires are unfortunately going to ignite nearby brush despite the best intentions of the ecologically aware, wildlife loving young pyromaniacs sorry! people.

Louisville police confirm two officers shot, one suspect in custody

Two officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department were shot Wednesday night during protests of the Breonna Taylor case, the interim chief of the Louisville Police Department confirmed in a press briefing.

Interim Police Chief Robert Schroeder told reporters that one officer is in surgery, and both are in stable condition. A suspect is in custody, according to Schroeder.

“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder said that around 8:30 p.m. ET, officers had been deployed downtown after shots were fired in a crowded area.

"We have had two officers shot tonight and it's very serious. It's a dangerous condition. I think the safety of the officers and community we serve is utmost importance," he added.

The names of the officers were not released.

Portland protesters tear down statues of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt

Image

Police declared a riot after windows in downtown buildings were smashed.

Protesters in Portland, Oregon, pulled down statues of former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt and broke windows late Sunday amid a demonstration on what organizers called an “Indigenous Day of Rage,” NBC local affiliate KGW reported.

Monday is the federal holiday Columbus Day, which some cities and states have renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Earlier in the evening, police tweeted that a mass gathering had formed and that some protesters were trying to “pull down a statue with a chain.”

An hour later, police declared the protest a riot, ordered protesters to disperse and said that those who chose to stay would be subject to “arrest, citation, or crowd control agents, including, but not limited to tear gas and impact weapons.”

Photos taken after the protest showed the Lincoln statue resting on its head with spray paint on the base, while the Roosevelt statue rested on its side with orange spray paint on the base. In addition to the toppling of the statues, the glass front and doors of the Oregon Historical Society were smashed.

In the announcement of the protest on Saturday, organizers Generational Resistance called on social media for an “end to colonialism” and the abolishment of the police in a post where they also asked for no photos or video to be taken.

They also warned indigenous people who wanted to bring “drums, medicine or regalia” that it “might not be the best event to bring things that are sacred to you.”

It was not immediately clear whether the statues were defaced by protesters involved in the Generational Resistance march.

Portland has become a flashpoint for sometimes violent political conflict. The city saw months of nightly protests after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, with some protesters lighting fires and antagonizing the police. In July, there were weeks of intense protests in the city after U.S. agents from the Department of Homeland Security were sent to guard a federal courthouse.

President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized the protests in Portland, on Monday published a series of tweets about Sunday night's demonstration, retweeting what appeared to be images of the damage and offering to send federal law enforcement.

In August, he praised a pro-Trump caravan of activists whose presence appeared to contribute to violent clashes in the city.
